"Yrr!! core walo ke liye bhi kuch karo", Potadey asked. So, we thought of giving an insight into career opportunities for core students from the perspective of a final year core student.
So here we are!! We asked Anubhav Potadey, a member of the Training and Placement Team, to give some guidance in this field. What you will read next is from Anubhav Potadey.
OPPORTUNITIES IN ABUNDANCE: A TROUBLE IN PARADISE!!!
Yes!! This is exactly as it sounds. If you are from the core sector, your plate is full of mouth-watering dishes but the problem is that you only get to choose one among them.
Let’s explore the plate first!
SO WHAT CAREER OPTIONS DO WE HAVE IN CORE SECTOR?
Option 1
Some of you might feel this way: “Fine! I have had enough of books and entrance exams in my life. It’s time to break free and settle down with a decent job in my core profile.”
If you are fortunate enough to be in a reputed college like NIT Allahabad that offers good placements then you can get a job of your choice in the core sector provided you are eligible.
Option 2
Another lot comes up with an opinion: “Buddy! I can’t imagine myself working in a core sector because I am just not made for it or I want to have a fancy CTC right at the beginning of my career.”
So what possible paths can they take now?
- Path 1: There is a sector of companies by the name of CONSULTANCIES that visit the campus and more importantly do not judge you on your technical or academic performance. Rather, they focus more on your personality, problem-solving skills, a slight programming knowledge and your sense of communication. So if you have a firm grip on your speaking and writing skills, this is an easy nut to crack! Having said that, the CTC offered is more or less at par with that of core companies but yes, your goal of switching from core sector definitely gets fulfilled.
- Path 2: Prepare for well-reputed management entrance exams namely CAT, XAT, GRE, GMAT, SNAP, etc. If you have good aptitude solving skills, then after browsing the syllabus for these exams, your eyes will certainly get lighten up. 😀
However, the success rate in this endeavor is fairly low because it demands a lot of regular dedication, practice and time in general from your already pre-occupied college schedule. But if you manage to score a very good percentile in any of the above exams, then my friend, in a matter of 2 years, the CTC and job profile printed on your offer letter will have enough potential to give you goosebumps(in a positive tone :p). All you need is good study material and lots of time to prepare! - Path 3: Okay! This is the most risky option among all and is applicable to only those core students who are confident enough to compete with the hardcore coders from software branches. If you have been in touch with the software syllabus taught to your CS/IT counterparts and have a good command at it, then only think of this option.
The only advantage of being successful in this field would mean a higher starting CTC and a good job location, unlike the core sector. One of the problems would be the small count of the companies that allow core branches (except ECE and EE) during placement drive so you need to be lucky and competent at the same time.
Option 3
Now comes the most hyped preferences among core students, which is preparing for entrance exams like GATE, ESE, IAS, etc. After all who wouldn’t like to pursue M.Tech from a top IIT and get a perfect core job post that or who would not want to have a safe, reputed and high paid government job in his hand right after graduating? So what are the opportunities regarding the same.
Few PSU’s visit the campus every year including IOCL, GAIL and HPCL but there is high uncertainty regarding their chance of campus visit, no. of vacancies and the branches that are allowed. So even if you have links with the Goddess of fortune, the chance of you getting placed in a PSU from college placement is uncertain.
That leaves you with the only option of cracking the GATE or ESE exam which again depends on how much time and effort you can devote to preparation and frankly it never gets enough: the time and effort.
WHAT SHOULD I CHOOSE?? THE ULTIMATE QUESTION!!!
So if you are in your penultimate or final year of your engineering still searching for an answer to the above question, THIS IS YOUR TIME!! INTROSPECT NOW!! TAKE A SHOWER, HAVE A NICE CUP OF COFFEE, MAKE NOTES, CONSULT EXPERTS, MEDITATE AND INTROSPECT. Don’t stop until you have a sincere answer to this question and please don’t end up with a cliche MNNITian answer: “lite hai, aage dekha jayega”. Kyon ki career ki baat hai..lite bilkul nahi hai!!
We will be posting more articles for core students soon. Till then keep supporting us and do follow us.
